Ms. Miriam S. Perez is a veteran nurse of over 35 years who has worked with the New York Organ Donor Network (NYODN) for over 17 years with the current position of Public & Professional Education Specialist.
In 1995 Ms. Perez was inducted as the only female (and only Latina) into the Minorities in Transplant Hall of Fame at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. for her many contributions to minorities and the transplant field. Among her various roles in the organ procurement organization, Ms. Perez has made many contributions to the Hispanic community. Some of which include, the first person in New York to translate all forms into Spanish, i.e., consent forms, donor letters, posters etc. She also produced and narrated a radio public service announcement in Spanish.
Ms. Perez has orchestrated over 100 local and national media appearances. She has made numerous presentations in the nation including a presentation in 1994 at the Howard University Hospital’s third Samuel L. Kountz Symposium on Renal Disease and Transplantation in Minorities where Ms. Perez presented and published a paper on Latinos having the highest consent rate for organ donation in New York City of any other ethnic group. She also presented at the Fifth New York State Assembly Puerto Rican Task Force with the late Assemblyman Angelo Del Toro on organ and tissue donation. In 1996, Ms. Perez spoke at the Association of Organ Procurement Organization’s Annual Meeting and at the Annual Conference of the American Association of Hispanic Nurses in July of 1996.
Ms. Perez is the Chairperson and board member for the Latino Organization for Liver Awareness. Other professional memberships include: an advisory member of the Transplant Recipients International Organization, the American Society for Minorities in Health and Transplant Professionals, and a – of the Hispanic Nurses Association. She also serves as a member of the New York Urban League – Bronx Chapter.
Ms. Perez graduated from the Borough of Manhattan Community College where she obtained an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in Nursing, from City College where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing and in 1996 graduated from Teachers College-Columbia University where she obtained a Masters of Arts Degree in the Nurse Executive Program.
Ms. Perez is a strong advocate for L.O.L.A. who promotes their efforts and conducts presentation to public and professional groups on L.O.L.A.’s mission. |
